An Open Letter to the Makers of The Wolf of Wall Street, and the Wolf Himself:

So here’s the deal. You people are dangerous. Your film is a reckless attempt at continuing to pretend that these sorts of schemes are entertaining, even as the country is reeling from yet another round of Wall Street scandals. We want to get lost in what? These phony financiers’ fun sexcapades and coke binges? Come on, we know the truth. This kind of behavior brought America to its knees.

And yet you’re glorifying it - you who call yourselvesliberals. You were honored for career excellence and for your cultural influenceby the Kennedy Center, Marty. You drive a Honda hybrid, Leo. Did you think about the cultural message you’d be sending when you decided to make this film? You have successfully aligned yourself with an accomplished criminal, a guy who still hasn’t made full restitution to his victims, exacerbating our national obsession with wealth and status and glorifying greed and psychopathic behavior. And don’t even get me started on the incomprehensible way in which your film degrades women, the misogynistic, ass-backwards message you endorse to younger generations of men.

Did she see a different movie than me? Because I don’t think anyone in their right mind comes out of this film thinking anything other than Jordan Belfort is a complete and utterly vile piece of shit. And those who do? They’re the exact kind of people the film is critiquing.

Orange and Teal, or How “Re-Mastering” is Distorting Our View of Classic Films:

The importance of colour timing, or rather, why so many of your blurays kind of look like shit.

The worst culprit of all time probably being the original French Connection bluray which was so bad it was almost unwatchable and renounced by the cinematographer who later helped re-time it for a re-release.

Ultimately it comes down to a personal preference: what looks better to you? Sometimes new bluray colour timings actually look quite nice to my eye, other times not. Are most people going to know what the film is “supposed” to look like? And what is “supposed to” — as it was originally presented, or what the director intended? What if the director and cinematographer make the change for what they always wanted? Is that okay?

Ultimately though, there is something disconcerting about going back and changing the look and feel of old movies to fit into today’s aesthetics. Keep it true to the original (or as true as one can be) should be the primary goal at all times.
